About Us
Dixie Slugs – Who
Are We?
I am a 6th generation Floridian…..Pure and
Simple! Having retired from engineering and working for the Gun and Ammo
companies, we are located in Old Town, Dixie County, Florida. The shop is
located in Old Town Hammock next to the Suwannee River. This is not where
it all began.
I was born in Wildwood, Florida….educated in local
schools, at Gainesville, and at Tallahassee. I started out in Highway
Engineering with the State of Florida, holding the position of Engineer 1.
In 1966, I was approached by Winchester-Western with an offer to cover the
State of Georgia as a Sales Representative. Having been
involved in firearms and ammo indirectly since 1956, I made the change.
Between 1956 and 1966, I had various manuscripts published in Gun Digest,
American Rifleman, Muzzle Blasts, and other publications. In
1971, while holding the position of District Sales Manager with
Winchester-Western, I was offered the position of Director of Marketing of
the Smith & Wesson Ammunition Co. This move gave me the
opportunity to be directly involved in the development of Smith & Wesson’s
new shot shell line. A few months later, I was moved to the position
of Vice-President & Director of Marketing. At that time the
Fiocchi family owned one-half interest in the company. Following the
separation of the Fiocchi family and Smith & Wesson, I went with the
Italians. During that period I was able to learn the basics of
international sales. In the 1980’s the political climate overseas
led me to return to Winchester-Western. as a District manager. Upon
leaving Winchester-Western, I moved back to my native state of Florida.
My latest endeavor, Dixie Slugs, has been the
re-introduction of ammunition that was used in the famous Paradox
shotguns, for use in modern shotguns with rifled barrels. This led
to the formation of Dixie Slugs as a family owned concern and is a Federal
Licensed Ammo manufacturer. The line now includes full bore
ammo for today’s rifled shotgun barrels. These loads for
rifled barrels are made from a hard alloy, hand cast, heat treated and
have an Alox wash for lube,
We also have the most advanced buckshot multi ball
loads available for the smoothbore shooter/hunter. These loads have three
.600” hard cast round balls, buffered with Teflon and in a heavy duty
plastic wad.
During my time with the firearm and ammo companies, I
was unable to publish my manuscripts on varied subjects. Some of these
will be found, along with others, in the Tech Note Section. We will
continue to add to the Tech Note section.
We also now have our Dixie Board of Advisors. I
consider each an expert in their particular field. Our products are field
tested by these experienced individuals, who are completely independent.
If a product does not work under the actual conditions it is designed for,
it goes into the trash bin!
Best Regards from all of the folks at Dixie
Slugs……….James C. Gates
